Provisional Patent Application Template: Sections, Example Outline & Checklist
Editorial archive: · 8 min read

A provisional patent application has no mandatory format beyond a written description and, when helpful, drawings. That freedom is exactly why many inventors file something too thin. A clear template keeps your description complete enough to support the claims you will write later in the non-provisional application.
1. Title of the invention
Use a short, descriptive title such as "Collapsible Pet Water Bottle with Integrated Bowl". Avoid marketing names or trademarks.
2. Field of the invention
One or two sentences stating the technical area, for example: "This disclosure relates to portable hydration devices for animals."
3. Background
Describe the problem and how existing products fall short. Keep it factual and avoid admitting that any specific product is identical to yours.
4. Summary
A plain-language overview of what the invention is and the main advantages it provides.
5. Brief description of the drawings
List each figure: "FIG. 1 is a perspective view…", "FIG. 2 is a cross-section…". Every figure you include should appear here.
6. Detailed description
This is the heart of the application. Explain every part, how parts connect and interact, materials, dimensions or ranges, and how to make and use the invention. Refer to each drawing element by its reference number (for example, "the hinge 14"). Describe alternative versions too: different materials, shapes, power sources or optional features.
7. Optional claims and abstract
Claims are not required in a provisional, but drafting a few can help you think about what is truly new. A short abstract is also useful for later filings.
Pre-filing checklist
Does someone skilled in the field understand how to build it? Are all drawing numbers explained in the text? Did you describe at least one working version and the main alternatives? Are inventor names and residences correct? Have you checked your entity status and the current USPTO fee?
GetQuickPatent turns a one-paragraph description into a draft that follows this structure, including numbered technical drawings, so you can review and edit every section before filing.
