Patent Drawing Rules for Provisional Applications
· 6 min read
A US provisional application should include drawings when they are necessary to understand the invention. Missing technical detail generally cannot be added later while keeping the original filing date for that new material.
Which views should you include?
Choose views that explain the invention: assemblies, exploded views, sections, flowcharts or system diagrams as appropriate. Show important relationships rather than adding decorative images.
How should figures and parts be labeled?
Use consistent figure numbers and reference numerals throughout the drawings and description. Ensure each important label has a clear explanation and that the same part is not identified inconsistently.
Must provisional drawings look like final patent art?
Provisional filings do not require every formality of nonprovisional drawings, but clarity remains essential. A readable sketch can convey useful detail; a polished image that hides the mechanism cannot.
Review the current USPTO drawing guidance for the application type you plan to file. Do not assume photographs, color or screenshots will satisfy every later filing requirement.
GetQuickPatent helps structure a provisional draft around your technical explanation. Review the actual figures separately so the written disclosure and visual details support one another.
